Did negligent security contribute to this mall parking lot shooting? Read Our Legal Take to find out if the victim may have a claim for compensation.
Local News
A shooting outside the Columbia Place Mall reportedly left one man injured Saturday morning, May 28, 2016.
According to WFXG News, the shooting occurred “late Saturday morning at the Columbia Place Mall.” The victim was apparently shot “in the parking lot of the Burlington Coat Factory store.” He was transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg, per WLTX 19 reports.
Police have not identified a suspect or motive in the attack, which comes only three months after a “report of shots fired” at another Columbia mall.
Our Legal Take
Mall and parking lot patrons have a right to be safe and secure while on the premises of the establishment that they are visiting. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided to patrons of the parking lot where this incident occurred and whether this shooting may have been prevented.
- What parking lot security measures, such as surveillance cameras and security patrols, were in place to protect patrons at the time of the shooting?
- Following a “report of shots fired” at another local mall, were any additional security precautions implemented by the mall owner and management to deter crime at this property?
Generally, mall and parking lot owners are required to protect all patrons legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the owner or management of the mall parking lot failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the victim may elect to seek justice and pursue a legal claim for his injuries.
Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victim retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim. Based upon its prior experience in handling property security negligence claims, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed.
