Will the Victims Pursue Legal Claims for Their Injuries?

Local News

19-year-old Demetrius Lamont Johnson and 25-year-old Dominique Ligon were reportedly shot and injured at the Green Hills Apartments in East Knoxville Monday night, May 22, 2017.

WBIR News reports, the shooting occurred at the “Green Hills” apartment complex “at 1837 Riverside Drive,” shortly before 7:00 p.m. Mr. Johnson and Mr. Ligon were struck and injured in the hail of gunfire. Their current conditions have not been released.

A property maintenance man reportedly told the Knoxville News Sentinel, “the complex has become a ‘hot spot’ and he intends to ask his supervisor if he can be transferred to a different apartment building.”

Our Legal Take

Apartment residents and guests have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided on the property and whether this shooting may have been prevented.

  • Have there been prior incidents of violence on or near property? What security measures, such as gated entry, surveillance cameras and security patrols, were in place to deter crime and protect residents and guests at the time of the shooting?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all patrons legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the apartment complex owner or management company failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, Demetrius Johnson and Dominique Ligon may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims for their wrongful deaths.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victims retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
